Artist's Statement:

My love of nature, which is evident in my work, was fostered by my parents. My father worked outdoors and his observations of the natural world often kept us entertained at the family dinner table. My mother kept a garden and I often believe that my love of colour, shape and design was born there.

My preferred medium is watercolour, although I also work in graphite, pen and ink, and acrylic.

I love to paint and draw on location, almost always in my sketchbook. My on location sketches are integral to my process. They inform and underpin everything I paint. They allow me to get to know and understand my subject so that when I return to my studio I am free to play, imagine and create

Susan’s self directed study and participation in workshops offered by both local and regional artists, have contributed to her growth as an artist. Susan has attended courses in plein air painting at Southampton Art School and in Killarney as well as drawing and painting courses offered by the University of Western Ontario Continuing Studies Department and Fanshawe College. Susan has painted on location in Southwestern Ontario, Northern Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, England, Italy and France.

Susan has served on the executive of The Lambeth Art Association, The Gallery Painting Group and the Brush and Palette Club. She is a member of The Central Ontario Art Association and CARFAC as well as an Associate Member of each of: The Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, The Transparent Watercolor Society of America and The Society of Canadian Artists.
